Beginning Sewing Basics Mariah’s Eclectic Craft Studio Beginner Level • No Sewing Experience Needed Have a sewing machine but aren’t quite sure where to start? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to sew and need someone to walk you through the basics? This one-day Beginning Sewing Basics class is designed for the true beginner. We’ll start at the very beginning and work step-by-step through the basic skills you need to feel more comfortable using a sewing machine. What You’ll Learn During class, we’ll cover: • The basic parts of your sewing machine and what they do • How to properly wind and load a bobbin • How to thread your sewing machine • Basic machine settings and stitches • How to start, stop, and sew a straight line • Basic fabric handling and sewing techniques • How to guide your fabric through the machine • Simple quilting and finishing techniques Once we’ve practiced the basics, you’ll put those new skills to use by making a set of four scrappy, raw-edge quilted coasters to take home. This project was chosen specifically for beginners. It gives you a chance to practice sewing straight lines, working with layers of fabric, and getting comfortable at your machine without worrying about making everything perfect. Supplies All fabric and project supplies are included in the class fee. We’ll be working with a fun assortment of scraps, so there is no fabric shopping or complicated supply list needed. Bring your sewing machine, along with its power cord, foot pedal, bobbins, and basic accessories that came with it. If you have your machine manual, bring that too! Every sewing machine is a little different, and having your manual available can be helpful while we learn your particular machine. Who Is This Class For? This class is perfect if: • You have never sewn before • You recently purchased or were given a sewing machine • Your machine has been sitting in the closet because you don’t know where to begin • You’ve tried teaching yourself but would like some hands-on help • You know a tiny bit about sewing but want a better understanding of the basics No previous sewing experience is required. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s to leave class understanding your machine, knowing the basic steps to get started, and having the confidence to keep sewing at home. Your Take-Home Project By the end of class, you’ll have created four scrappy quilted coasters using the skills you learned throughout the day. You’ll leave with your finished project, hands-on sewing practice, and a much better understanding of how to use your sewing machine. Taught by Mariah Mariah’s Eclectic Craft Studio
