MahoganyBooks + Very Smart Brothas Book Club: October Discussion

About

THE EVENT The MahoganyBooks & Very Smart Brothas book club is excited to announce our September book club read, How to be Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. Kendi's concept of anti racism, reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. He asks us to think about what an antiracist society my look like, and how we can play an active role in building it. "In this sharp blend of social commentary and memoir . . . Kendi is ready to spread his message, his stories serving as a springboard for potent explorations of race, gender, colorism, and more. . . ." --Library Journal (starred review) Open to the public, as well as, live streamed to Facebook, the MahoganyBooks + Very Smart Brothas book club is a monthly book club that reads a wide range of books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora then meets the first Friday of the following month to discuss and debate the book and its associated themes. Join the MahoganyBooks + Very Smart Brothas Book Club on October 4, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM for what promises to be a fun and engaging book discussion. THE BOOK Antiracism is a transformative concept that reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism—and, even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. At it's core, racism is a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value; its warped logic extends beyond race, from the way we regard people of different ethnicities or skin colors to the way we treat people of different sexes, gender identities, and body types. Racism intersects with class and culture and geography and even changes the way we see and value ourselves. In How to Be an Antiracist, Kendi takes readers through a widening circle of antiracist ideas—from the most basic concepts to visionary possibilities—that will help readers see all forms of racism clearly, understand their poisonous consequences, and work to oppose them in our systems and in ourselves. THE SPONSOR VerySmartBrothas is an award-winning blog about pop culture, race, and relationships. Damon Young and Panama Jackson are the two writers of the blog. They are awesome.
