About

A Week of Outdoor Skills and Fire Safety Get ready for an adventurous week filled with hands-on activities that teach essential campfire skills and fire safety while having fun, making new friends, and connecting with nature. They’ll master three ways to build fires for cooking, including gathering materials and finding dry kindling and firewood—even in wet conditions. Campers will create a fire pit, practice building successful campfires, learn how to light them safely, and design a self-feeding fire. Alongside these skills, campers will develop critical fire safety practices, such as understanding county and state burn bans, preventing root fires, keeping water and fire blankets nearby, and clearing the area around the firepit to avoid sparks igniting nearby materials. Campers will discover the best types of wood for various purposes, learning to whittle hot dog sticks that won’t leave a bad taste, select long-burning firewood, and reduce smoke for a better campfire experience. Next, they’ll advance their skills by crafting Swedish fire logs and building rocket stoves with natural or inexpensive materials, deepening their understanding of fire science and safety. The week wraps up with an outdoor cooking challenge, where campers will put their skills to the test by preparing roasted veggies, baked potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, and, of course, hot dogs and s’mores! This camp is perfect for adventurous kids who want to build confidence, develop practical outdoor skills, and learn the importance of fire safety while enjoying the magic of campfires.
