Washington State businesses are beginning to experience the effects of significant tax legislation passed in 2025, with additional developments expected in 2026. This session will provide an overview of key changes, including the new sales tax on services, increases to B&O tax rates, capital gains taxes, and the taxability of investment income, along with insights into how the Washington Department of Revenue is implementing these laws. Attendees will also explore areas of uncertainty in the current statutes and gain perspective on potential legislative actions in the upcoming session to better anticipate and manage tax impacts on business operations and budgets. Rachel Roberson is Director of State and Local Tax at Sweeney Conrad, a public accounting and advisory firm in Kirkland, Washington. For over 15 years, she has worked with clients in construction and real estate development, manufacturing, technology and professional services. She consults with clients on Washington state and local taxes including audit assistance, transaction planning, sales and use taxes as well as multistate nexus. She believes in proactive planning, which requires knowing not only the rules and policies of today, but actively monitoring tax legislation and court cases for changes that have future impacts. History may not repeat itself, but it often rhymes, so understanding where we are and how we got here informs where the future may lead.
